Stevenage
Arts Society (formerly known as Artists' Co-operative) is probably the
most active amateur art society in the country with at least three
exhibitions each year and working groups meeting on most days of the
week. Since 1972 the society's headquarters have been in Springfield
House in Stevenage High Street, where it has its own galleries, pottery,
workshop and private studios.
Artists' Co-operative was
conceived by a group of Stevenage painters and born in 1968 with the
stated aim of "Fostering the Arts in Stevenage". A totally
amateur, non-political and democratic organization, the society is run
by an executive committee which is elected each year at the annual
general meeting
For financial protection the society
recently formed Stevenage Arts Society Ltd. a non-profit company limited
by garauntee.
Membership of the society is open to
anyone interested in participating in the fine arts and willing to abide
by the society's rules and customs. An annual subscription of £15 (£12
for OAPs and full time students) is levied and anyone attending working
group meetings is asked for a small fee at each attendance.
Members are kept fully informed of the
comprehensive programme of Events and Activities organized throughout
the year.
You don't have to be a great artist to
join but you'll be welcome if you have a sense of humour and a genuine
desire to pot, paint, draw, etc.
